The University Without Walls began in 1971 as an experiment in non-traditional education jointly funded by the Ford Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education, and granted Skidmore College degrees from 1975 to 2012.

Operating under the auspices of the Office of Special Programs at Skidmore College, UWW was registered with the State of New York.
